Asparagus meyeri and Asparagus retrofractus are two of our largest seed crops at Growing Hope Seeds. With over 8,000,000 Meyeri seeds and 3,000,000 retrofractus seeds produced each season, these plants represent a major part of our Southern California production.
For us, these crops are more than names on an availability list. They represent years of collecting seed, developing production, and working with growers who depend on a consistent supply.
Asparagus Meyeri: A Grower Favorite
Asparagus meyeri, commonly known as foxtail fern, stands out for its dense, upright plumes of green foliage. Its distinctive shape makes it a familiar choice for landscape plantings, containers, and ornamental nursery production.
Meyeri has become one of Growing Hope Seeds’ core crops. Producing more than eight million seeds each season allows us to support growers planning everything from smaller batches to large production runs.
Our experience with this crop starts well before the seed is packed. Following plants through the season and paying attention to berry maturity helps guide our collection work. After harvest, seed is cleaned and prepared for storage and distribution.

Asparagus Retrofractus: Airy Foliage with Character
Asparagus retrofractus, often called ming fern, offers a very different look. Its branching stems and fine, tufted foliage create an airy appearance that contrasts with the dense plumes of Meyeri.
Retrofractus is another important part of our production, with more than three million seeds produced each season. We value this crop for its distinctive character and its place in ornamental plant production.
Growing both species gives us the opportunity to supply two recognizable foliage plants, each with its own form and appeal.

Production Built Through Experience
Growing Hope Seeds began with hands-on seed collection, and that experience continues to shape our work. Over the years, we have developed production in Southern California to support the needs of our customers and build a dependable foundation for our seed business.
Working closely with these crops helps us understand their seasonal patterns and the work involved in bringing seed from the plant to the grower. Collection, cleaning, and storage all matter, especially when handling millions of seeds each season.
We take pride in the scale of our production, but we also know what matters to our customers: clear communication, reliable availability, and seed they can plan their growing schedules around.
